Kala Pathar Beach, Havelock Island, Andaman

Kala Pathar beach is an east facing beach, which is open to public (not a private beach). This beach is one of the MUST-SEE places in Havelock Island. Tourists do visit this place but it is not crowded.

TIDBIT: Kala Pathar’ in Hindi means ‘Black Stone’. The huge black stones in the clean water gives this beach its name

The white sanded beach with clean and calm turquoise colored water dotted with huge black stones (which is why the beach is called ‘Kala Pathar’ meaning ‘Black Stone’) takes ones breath away.

TIP: Go to Kala Pathar beach for Sunrise.

Reaching Havelock Island from Port Blair

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a group of Islands in the Bay of Bengal and is part of India. It is almost equidistant from Kolkatta and Chennai and much closer to Thailand.

Havelock is one of the most popular islands for tourists due to its clean and soft seas with white-sand beaches. Click here to see Havelock Island Photos I took.

The usual route taken to Havelock is to fly to Port Blair from the main land (of India) and then to take the ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Islands.

Booking the ferry ticket:

If you have booked a package deal from one of the travel agents, then most probably they would have booked the ferry ticket for you, but if you booked the flights and hotels on your own, you might have a hard time getting the ferry ticket.

TIP: if tickets to Havelock island is not available, get one to Neil Island (this island is very close to Havelock)

If you want to book the ticket for the same day(which we[wife and I] did!), then you will have to reach the Port Blair jetty booking office by 8AM, even though the the booking counter opens at 9AM. THERE IS NO ONLINE BOOKING! Once you get inside the booking office, get a form where you will need to fill in the passenger details.

TIP: if you are landing in Port Blair that morning and planning to get a ferry ticket, take a bottle of water and biscuits because the experience can be a little tiring and these things can help you make friends too!

The gates to the office open by 8 AM, when the crowd will rush-in like mad cows to get in line in front of one of 6 counters ( 3 for men, 2 for women and 1 for senior citizens and specially-abled.) You have to stand in the queue for an hour till 9AM for the booking to begin. There usually are a lot of ‘agents’ booking tickets for their clients and each of them book more than the limit allowed per person. Don’t panic, your turn will come and God willing you will get the ticket (which we did!) for a 2PM ferry ( the last one out of Port Blair and to Havelock island). The crazy frenzy ends by 10 AM. So if you are in no hurry to book the tickets for the same day, you will do well to go to the booking office after 11 AM and book a ferry for the next day.

TIP: if you are getting out of Port Blair to Havelock Island on the same day as when you land there, then book the 2 PM ferry, so that you can visit the Cellular Jail and have time for breakfast and lunch at port Blair
